California cannabis tax, explained

Updated July 2026 · 5 min read

If your legal cannabis feels expensive, you're not imagining it. Several taxes stack on top of the shelf price — but a medical card lets you skip one of the biggest. Here's the breakdown.

The taxes on legal cannabis in California

What a medical card actually saves you

The headline saving is the ~15% state excise tax, plus sales/use tax with a state MMIC. On a $300/month habit, skipping ~15% is roughly $540 a year — and that's before sales-tax savings. The more you buy, the more the card is worth.

A quick example

Spend $150/week recreationally and a big chunk of what you hand over is tax. As a medical patient, that excise portion simply comes off. Over a year, for many regular buyers, the savings run into the hundreds — often far more than the cost of getting and maintaining the card.

Is it worth it for you?

If you buy occasionally, the convenience and access matter more than the tax. If you buy regularly, the math usually favors going medical. Use our calculator to see your own number.
