Qualifying conditions for medical cannabis in California

Updated July 2026 ยท 5 min read

California has one of the broadest medical-cannabis frameworks in the country. The qualifying-condition list is wide, and it includes a catch-all for any condition where cannabis may provide relief. Here's how it works.

Conditions specifically named in California law

The important catch-all

Beyond the named conditions, California law allows a physician to recommend cannabis for any condition for which it may provide relief, in their professional judgment. This is why the framework is so accessible โ€” the decision rests with a licensed provider evaluating your individual situation.

How the evaluation works

You complete a short online visit with a California-licensed telehealth provider. They review your history and symptoms and, if appropriate, issue a recommendation โ€” frequently the same day. You don't need existing medical records in hand, though they can help.

Age note

Adults 21+ can qualify broadly. Adults 18โ€“20 can also qualify, with a documented qualifying condition, giving them legal access before recreational eligibility.
